HDC Between the Stitches: Easy Stitch

Make this easy stitch and begin making blankets, scarves and anything you can think of!

My favorite Tulip 10mm crochet hook. (This is an Amazon affiliate link.) I make a small commission if you buy items from my approved links at no extra cost to you. It glides through every stitch with ease.

Chain any number, a little bigger than you want your project to be.

Skip the first chain. Half double crochet in the second chain and in each chain across.

Place your yarn over the hook.

Put your hook in the 2nd chain.

Do yourself a favor here and pull the loop up high. This will help tremendously when you need to pull the hook and yarn through all the loops.

Pull the yarn through the chain.

Put the yarn over the hook.

Now you will have 3 loops on your hook. Make sure you pull the loops up high to leave a tunnel to pull the hook and yarn through.

Pull the yarn through all 3 loops on your hook.

Keeping your loops loose helps when you have to pull the hook and yarn through multiple loops. You can wiggle it through pretty easily. It helps if you pull the yarn up high after you yarn over, before going between the stitches.

Chain 2 and turn your work so the chain 2 is now on your right side.

Finding the space between the stitches is easy! Just put your finger right through the gap. I was able to crochet some stitches without even looking. You can just feel for the next space! How easy is that? I don’t know about you, but I like easy.

I also like the fact that this works up so quickly. I usually have several projects in the works at any one time.

The first half double crochet of the row is placed between the first and second stitch from the row below. Find each space between the stitches from the row below. Half double crochet in each space across. Chain 2 at the end of each row. It’s that’s easy!

There’s no need for a border with this stitch. If you did choose to make a border, the edges would be very easy to work with.

You can see the stitches more clearly with the different colors.

Going between the stitches leaves a lovely texture with no holes. This makes for a warm, cozy blanket. This stitch would also be great from sweaters, scarves, hats and bags!

This half double crochet between the stitches pattern would also be ideal for a baby blanket. It’s best to not have holes or gaps in baby items. This would be so pretty in pastel colors!

Watch the tutorial below to see how I change colors at the end of the row. It’s very easy with this super bulky yarn.

Check out the pattern I made with half double crochet between the stitches.

This is one of my favorite blankets. It goes with most of my farmhouse/cabin decor. It’s so cushy and soft, but also lightweight. I love that there are no holes or gaps. A bonus is how quickly this pattern works up, especially if you use just one color.

This would make an excellent gift! Every blanket that I gift that’s made with Bernat Blanket yarn is a hit. Young and old love it. I’m always happy to see others getting use of something I made by hand!

Let me know if you made this. What colors did you choose?

Now I live in the country with my husband, a retired aerospace engineer, and our 2 Black Russian Terriers, Zhanna and Misha.
