Make this easy, beautiful granny square patchwork quilt with 10” squares. The zig zag join gives it a modern twist.
Doesn’t this granny square patchwork quilt look vintage? That’s what I was going for!
This pattern came about because I wanted to crochet something that resembled a vintage patchwork quilt. I find the flat granny squares to be perfect for this. The zig zag join adds interest and texture.
You can make it any size you like. I used 3 colors and 10” squares. Each square has 5 rounds. Each round adds 2”. Use these measurements to alter the pattern for your own quilt if desired.
I love Bernat Forever Fleece. It is incredibly soft and thick. Looking for a cozy feel? You’ve found it!
You can also try this pattern made with Bernat Forever Fleece yarn.

Now you’re ready to make your granny square patchwork quilt!
Your square should be approximately 10” now.

Fasten or, preferably, use an invisible join. First, it gives a seamless, invisible look. Second, it makes joining the squares easy because you have a stitch and not a knot.
Please watch the Granny Square Patchwork Quilt video to see how to make the zig zag join.
Join each square:

Using the zig zag join, first lay out your squares in the pattern of your choice. Use stitch markers to hold them in place. Join all rows either horizontally or vertically. Return and join all rows in the other direction. Skip over the join when you reach a new set of squares.
Border:
The border is made of half double crochet across 2 stitches and easy twisted single crochet stitches. Perfect for this quilt because it closely resembles the thickness of the zig zag join. Also a bonus, it only requires 2 rounds.
Join your border color in a stitch before the corner.
Pull the yarn through with a slip stitch. Chain 1.
Round 1: Working in back loops only:
Yarn over and go back into the same stitch. Put your hook in the next stitch from the back. Yarn over and pull the yarn through. Yarn over an pull through all 3 loops.
Yarn over. Put your hook in the same stitch (back loop only) and come in the next stitch from the back. Pull the yarn through. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
Continue this pattern in the back loops of each stitch around. Join the first stitch with a slip stitch.
Round 2:
Going into the same stitch, pull the yarn through with a tall loop. Twist the hook counterclockwise towards you and back around. Yarn over and pull through the loops. You just made a twisted single crochet!
Make a twisted single crochet in each stitch around.
When you reach the first stitch, join with a slip stitch in the back 2 loops for a seamless finish.
That’s it! I told you it was easy. While being a little time consuming, I found it to be a pleasure to make.. I’m already thinking of making it in other colors. What colors did you choose?
