I used Bernat Forever Fleece yarn for this beautiful bar stitch blanket. This is one of my favorite yarns. Chunky yarns make soft, thick blankets that work up quickly.
I made this bar stitch pattern for a baby. It is to be used as a floor time or tummy time blanket. It could also be used as a throw.

Bernat Forever Fleece super bulky 6 weight yarn
Color A: White Noise
Color B: Winter Waves
Color C: Patchouli
With color A:
Chain 93 (or any multiple of 3 to make the blanket as wide as you like.)
Row 1:
Skip the first chain.
Place a single crochet in the back bump of the next chain
Next, place a single crochet in the back bump of each chain across.
Chain 1 and turn your work.
Row 2:
Single crochet in the first stitch and in each stitch across.
Chain 1 and turn your work.
Row 3:
Place a single crochet in each of the first 2 stitches.
Next, you’ll make a front post double crochet in the next stitch from the very first row. So count over to the 3rd single crochet from the first row.
Yarn over and place your hook behind the 3rd single crochet from the first row.
Push the stitch forward.
Yarn over and pull the yarn through. Pull the loop up high, even with the other loops.
Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
Now, yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops. That’s a front post double crochet.

So, the stitch pattern for the rest of the row is 2 single crochet, 1 front post double crochet.
End the row with 2 single crochet.
Chain 1 and turn your work.
Row 4:
Single crochet in the first stitch and in each stitch across.
Chain 1 and turn your work.
Row 5:
Single crochet in the first 2 stitches.
Place a front post double crochet next double crochet from the previous row.
Now you’ll see the bar stitch pattern forming. You’ll find it’s easy to find the double crochet below now.
Continue the pattern of 2 single crochet followed by 1 front post double crochet.
End the row with 2 single crochet.
Chain 1 and turn your work.
Rows 6-8
Repeat rows 4 and 5
You’ll end on a single crochet row.
At the end of row 8, drop color A before pulling the yarn through the last 2 loops. Pick up color B and pull through the last loops.
Chain 1 and turn your work.
Continue the bar stitch pattern of changing colors after 8 rows. I used 3 colors and ended the last stripe with color A on a single crochet row.
Chain 1 and fasten off after your last row.
That’s it! I hope you enjoy this pattern.
Here’s another pattern made with Forever Fleece yarn.
This bar stitch pattern is easily adjustable. Make the blanket wider and longer if you’re making it for a bed.
Here’s my downloadable chart for standard blanket measurements.
This bar stitch would also be perfect for a pillow cover. Chain 36 to make a 12” x 20” pillow cover. Alternatively, you can create a 20” x 20” pillow cover, similar to the pattern provided.
