Easy Crochet Ribbed Pillow

Make this ribbed pillow cover in a couple of hours!

I don’t normally like to work with black yarn. It’s hard for me to see the stitches. When I use chunky yarn like the Bernat Softee Chunky it’s much easier to see the stitches. It worked perfectly for this chunky ribbed pillow cover.

This pillow cover is an easy 2 row repeat pattern. Since one of the rows contains slip stitches, be sure to keep those loose. That way you can get your hook through on the next row. The ribbed stitch reminds me of a cozy sweater!

Using buttons to close the back (or front if you prefer) allows you to remove the cover. You can change out the cover for seasons and store flat. You can also just remove it to wash. That’s handy!

Materials Used:

Bernat Softee Chunky super bulky 6 weight yarn in Black

10mm crochet hook

20” square pillow form

tapestry needle

3 buttons

Begin by making a chain of 37 for a 20” x 20” pillow cover.

The cover should be an inch or 2 smaller than the pillow form.

Row 1:

Skip the first chain and make a half double crochet in the second chain from the hook. I like to use the back bump.

Next, place a half double crochet in each chain across.

At the end of the row, chain 1 and turn your work.

Row 2:

Now, in the very first stitch, place a slip stitch in the back loop only. Keep your stitches loose so you can work into them easily on the next row. Also, this helps to keep your edges even.

Place a slip stitch in the back loop only of each stitch across the row.

At the end of the row, chain 1 and turn your work.

Row 3:

Half double crochet into the back loop only of the first stitch.

Next, half double crochet into the back loop only of each stitch across. Now you’ll be happy you made your slip stitches loose on the previous row.

At the end of the row, chain 1 and turn your work.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until your panel reaches at least 42”

Last Row:

Half double crochet in the first 9 stitches. Go into the full stitch, under both the front and back loop.

Chain 1. This will make a button loop. Chain 2 if you’re using bigger buttons. I used 1” buttons.

Again, half double crochet into the next 9 stitches.

Chain 1.

Once more, half double crochet into the next 9 stitches.

Chain 1.

Half double crochet into the last 9 stitches. Fasten off by chaining 1, cut to leave a tail and pull the tail through to tighten up.

Seaming the pillow cover together.

Fold the panel so the button loop edge is on the inside. Overlap by about 2”. Just make sure you line up the edges so both sides are overlapped in the same row.

Now, simply use a tapestry needle threaded with a long length of yarn to whip stitch the edges together. Make sure to go through all the thicknesses when you get to the part that is overlapped.

When you finish sewing the seams together, make a knot to fasten off.

Turn your pillow cover right side out. Line up and mark where your buttons will go. Sew the buttons on with thread or yarn if your button holes are big enough.

Add your pillow form and you’re done!

Button the cover and set your new pillow wherever you like! It’s perfect for a sofa, chair or bed.

If you’d like to make another pillow cover, try this pattern for a 12” x 20” lumbar pillow.
