Crochet White Almond Ridged Square Pillow Cover

I love how this looks!  The white and almond make such a nice, neutral palette.  I find it a very soothing combination.

Color A: Almond

Color B:  White

or a less expensive (4 skeins of 220 yards each) https://amzn.to/4srfgYm

10mm crochet hook My favorite Tulip hook. It’s very easy to work with.

Let’s get started!

Round 1

Begin with color A.  Make a magic ring.

Chain 4  this will be part of the original corner space.

Make 3 dc in the circle.

Chain 2

Make 3 dc in the circle, chain 2

Make 3 dc in the circle, chain 2

Make 2 dc in the circle.  Join the 3rd chain with a slip stitch.

Go under the chain space, bring the yarn through and make another slip stitch.

Chain 4 (this counts as the first dc of the round plus chain space.  You’ll make the other 2 dc of the first corner when you come all the way around.)

Round 2

Make 3 dc in the chain space.

*Skip to the next chain space.

Make 3 dc in the chain space, chain 2, make another 3 dc in the chain space.*

Repeat from * to *

When you reach the first corner, go into the chain space below, make a 2 dc. That counts as your first 2 dc of the first corner of the round.

Join the 3rd chain with a slip stitch.

Round 3

Drop color A, but leave it to pull up after 2 more rounds.

I used each color for 2 rounds.

Bring the yarn through the chain space.

Slip stitch.

Chain 4

3 dc in the same chain space

In the next space, dc, then make front post treble crochet in the middle of 3 dc from 2 rounds below.

The front post trebles will always be in the middle dc from 2 rounds below.

Continue the pattern. Each corner gets 3 dc, chain 2, 3  dc

When you reach the first corner, make 2 dc in the chain space from the previous round and join the 3rd chain with a slip stitch.

Go into the chain space, pull the yarn through and make another slip stitch.

Chain 4

Round 4

Continue the same pattern.

At the end of round 4, drop color B and pick up color A.

Work rounds 5 and 6 with color A

Round 7, drop color A, pick up color B.

Repeat the pattern around.

Round 8

This where I started making the edging.

Bring color B through the chain space and slip stitch.  Chain 1

sc, chain 1,  sc in the corner chain space.

Now we’ll work sc’s in each stitch.  When you reach the gap, make a sc in the first stitch, front post treble in the middle dc from 2 rounds below, and sc in the next stitch.  Be sure you skip the stitch behind the fp treble you just made.

Continue to the corner.  Each corner gets a sc, chain 1, sc

Work that pattern around and slip stitch to the first sc.

Drop color B, pick up color A

The rest of the pattern will be all color A.  This will be the border edge of the front of the pillow cover and then we’ll make the back.  You can cut color B and weave in the tail.

Round 9

Chain 1

Herringbone Half Double Crochet (hhdc) yarn over, put your hook in the stitch. Yarn over, pull the yarn through. 3 loops on your hook. Pull the first loop through the second loop. Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops.

Make a herringbone half double crochet (or a regular hdc if you prefer) in the chain space.  Chain 1, make another hbhdc in the chain space.

Hhdc in each stitch, every corner gets a Hhdc, chain 1, Hhdc.

Continue around.

When you reach the first Hhdc, slip stitch into it and chain 1

Repeat round 9 until the square is as big as you like.  It should just fit over the top of your pillow form.

Now you’ll begin making the back by working back and forth in rows.

Place your hook in the corner chain, not the chain space.  Pull through with a slip stitch. Chain one and turn your cover.  Work a Hhdc in the first stitch and in each stitch across.  Finish with a Hhdc in the corner chain, chain 1 and turn.

Continue making rows of Hhdc until your back panel is at least 4” longer than your front panel.

Fold the panels so the right sides are together.  Fold the back panel edge down, on the outside.  You’ll be seaming both sides.

Now begin seaming by starting in the bottom corner.  I used single crochet going in one loop on either side.  You can sew it with a tapestry needle if you prefer.

Be sure to go through all 3 layers at the top folded part.

Leave the top open.

Seam up the other side.

Turn the cover right side out and put your pillow inside.

If you want to leave it open so you can wash/store it, just use a button or a chain to attach the front to the back at the center.  I made a chain of 30 and loosely tied it and tucked in the ends.

An alternate way to make the opening close all the way would be to attach a chain on both corner, weave them in and out until they reach the center, and tie them together.

Be looking for the coordinated blanket, coming soon.

That’s it!
