About Me: Why I Love to Crochet

Hi, I’m Debi C. I love to crochet!

After retiring from teaching a few years ago, I gave my daughter-in-law some tips on crocheting . I made video tutorials and she encouraged me to make them public.

I’m so happy when my tutorials can help someone create with yarn!

How I chose “i-crochet” for my blog title:

I Crochet!

Welcome friends!  I’m Debi and I crochet.  Some would say it’s an addiction, I say it’s a creative outlet.

There’s a (kind of ) funny story behind the title.

After a medical procedure, I asked the recovery room nurse if I said anything while waking up from anesthesia.  I was worried that I’d said something embarrassing.  She said, “No, you just woke up a couple of times and said, “I crochet.”

Not the worst thing I could have said.

For sure, but at first I was a little embarrassed for saying something so seemingly random. It was even boring.  In my defense, it was freezing in the rooms. Two of the nurses were wearing crocheted hats and scarves. So, not totally random, right?  Still, not very exciting, like “I mountain climb.” or “I windsurf.” (which I used to do).  Why did I choose to say, “I crochet.” ?

For the next few days, I pondered why I felt silly for saying, “I crochet.”  I remembered why I started crocheting.  After my husband and I retired, we sold the house we lived in for 17 years. I was an early childhood special education teacher. He was an aerospace engineer. We took off with our two Black Russian Terriers and a 26’ travel trailer. Our goal was to travel and find our new home.

Looking for something to occupy my time that could help me feel connected to my son. (I had never been any distance from him for more than a couple of weeks.) Also, I wanted to connect with his future wife.

Soon I started crocheting, making hats and scarves.  Eventually I worked up to blankets and sweaters. I always thought of them while choosing the colors, the type of yarn, the stitches, and the patterns.  If you are into crafting, you know that feeling of making something with love.

With these memories, I realized that saying, “I crochet” wasn’t embarrassing at all.

It’s a statement that I create items from a hook and a ball of yarn. These items have the potential to make others feel love and comfort. They also feel a connection to me whenever they see, feel, and wear what I’ve made for them.

So, hey, I proudly say, “I crochet!”.

Now I would like to help others learn this amazing craft so you, too, can say, “I crochet!”
