Crochet Leaf Green Heather Waffle Stitch Blanket

I love Bernat Forever Fleece in the super bulky 6 weight.  When I saw this version in a 4 weight, I had to try it!  Like the bulky version, this yarn is so incredibly soft!  It’s like the inside of a soft fleece sweatshirt.  So cozy and comfy.

The yarn itself is so easy to work with since it’s so soft.  The blanket is light weight and perfect for Spring and Summer.

I used Bernat Forever  Fleece Finest 4 weight yarn in Leaf Green Heather.

Each skein has a whopping 888 yards!

I used less than 3 1/2 skeins for a 48” x 55” blanket

They call for a 4.5mm crochet  hook, but  I used a 5mm.

Dc=double crochet

Ch=chain

Stacked sc=stacked single crochet

Fpdc=front post double crochet

Begin with a chain that is a multiple of 3 plus 2 more at the end.

I chained 182 for a blanket that is 48” wide before making a border.  It started out at 52”, but this pattern “shrinks” the width from the initial row.

Row 1:

Dc in the back bump and in every back bump across.

Turn (do not chain)

Row 2:

Stacked single crochet which mimics a double crochet

Make a sc in the very first stitch, then put your hook in the left loop of that sc.

Make another sc.

That’s your stacked sc.

*Fpdc in the next dc from  the row below.

Dc in the next 2 stitches.*

Repeat from * to * until the last 2 stitches.

Fpdc in the next to last stitch.

Dc in the last stitch.

Turn, no chain

Row 3

Stacked sc in the first stitch.

*Dc in the next stitch.

Fpdc in the next 2 stitches.*

Repeat from * to * across ending with dc in each of the last 2 stitches.

You’ll start to see the 3d waffle effect now!

The back looks different than the front, but it’s also a pretty design.

It’s easy to see where to put the dc and where to put the fpdc now.  I’m used to the super bulky yarn working up really quickly, so while this does take longer to see progress, the pattern is so easy and the yarn so nice and lightweight, it’s worth the extra time.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until your blanket is as long as you like.

At this point mine is  45” wide and 55” long.

I ended on a row that made a whole square for the “waffle” side.

Fasten off if you’re not making a border.

If you want to make the border, keep reading.

Border:

5mm hook

I chose to use 2 colors for the border.

I already had some Red Heart Soft in White.  It’s a 4 weight yarn and  similar in feel to the Forever Fleece Finest.

Round 1:

Working on the wrong side (not the side with the waffle squares)

Sc, ch1, sc in the corner stitch.

Sc in each stitch around, making a sc, ch 1, sc in each corner.

When you reach the first sc, join with a slip stitch with the white yarn.  Ch 1 (cut the green yarn, leave a tail to weave in.)

Round 2

Switch to a 4mm hook

With the white yarn, hdc, ch 1, hdc in the corner space.

Hdc in each stitch around.

In each corner, hdc, ch 1, hdc

When you reach the first hdc of the round, slip stitch, cut the yarn and leave a tail.

Round 3

Join the green yarn in the same slip stitch.

Ch 1

In the corner space, sc, ch 1, sc

Sc between each hdc from the previous round.

In each corner space, sc, ch 1, sc

When you reach the first sc, slip stitch and fasten off or make an invisible join.

That’s it!
