This blanket is incredibly easy! It is soft and thick with a lovely texture. Either side looks pretty. While I made it as a baby blanket, I also know several people who love the color pink and use it as a main color in their decor.
The Winter Waves is a taupe/gray with a slight lavender hue. It looks different in different lighting. The Patchouli is a nice, light pink and the White Noise is a beautiful, bright white.
You can make this bar stitch blanket in any size or yarn weight, just chain a multiple of 3 a little wider than you want the blanket to begin, and use the recommended hook size for the yarn you choose. (I usually use a bigger hook than recommended, but that’s just personal preference.)
The single crochet stitch is a short stitch, so the blanket doesn’t “grow” as quickly as some of my other patterns. However, using the super bulky yarn helps it to go pretty quickly.
I definitely wanted a tighter, dense stitch for warmth, but if you want a looser stitch, simple use a larger hook or try a half double crochet instead of the single crochet.
The size I made (45” wide x 52” long) could be used as a baby blanket (especially nice for floor time), a blanket for a toddler bed, or a throw.
I chose to use 3 colors. Each stripe has 8 rows.
A solid color would also be pretty, as would any combination of 2 colors with wider stripes of 16 or more rows of each color.
The most difficult part of my design process is making the color choices. I want to make them in all the colors possible! Ultimately, I choose based on who/what the blanket is for.

Bernat Forever Fleece super bulky 6 weight yarn.
1 skein will make 2 of the stripes which are 8 rows each. This yarn comes in packs of 2 skeins.
Patchouli: 3 skeinshttps://amzn.to/47qwf1o
Winter Waves: 2 1/2 skeins (if this color is unavailable at the great price of around $9.00 for a 2 pack, substitute Balsam (a lighter beige) or Lavender.
10mm crochet hook
Stitches used:
Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc)
Single crochet (sc)
Chain (ch)
Color A:
Chain 93 (Or any multiple of 3)
Row 1:
Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook, (I prefer to use the back bump of the chains)
Sc in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (92 sc)
Row 2:
Sc in the first stitch and in each stitch across, ch 1, turn
Row 3:
Sc in the first 2 stitches
Front post dc (fpdc) in the sc 2 rows below (it will be the 3rd sc in the first row)
*Sc in the next 2 stitches
Fpdc around the 3rd sc from the last fpdc (in the first row)*
Repeat from * to * until the end of the row, end with 2 sc, ch 1, turn
Row 4:
Sc in the first stitch and in each stitch across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5:
Sc in the first 2 stitches. *Fpdc in the front post dc from 2 rows below. Sc in the next 2 stitches.* repeat from * to * ending with 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 6-8:
Repeat the pattern of rows 4 and 5. You will always end each color with the sc row (row 4).
At the end of row 8, begin a sc, but drop color A before pulling through the 2 loops. Pick up color B, complete the sc.
Ch 1, turn (I like to include the tail in my chain 1, then tightly tie the tails from the 2 colors together and come back later to weave in the ends.)
You will have 3 front post double crochets (vertically) in this first stripe. The rest of stripes in the blanket will have 4 fpdc. I found it easier to count the 4 fpdc than counting rows. Once you have 4 fpdc (vertically), then the final row of that color will be all sc.
Rows 9-16:
Repeat rows 4 and 5.
At the end of row 16, begin a sc, drop color B, pick up color C and complete the sc. ch 1, turn
Rows 17-24:
Repeat rows 4 and 5.
At the end of row 24, begin a sc, drop color C, pick up color A and complete the sc. ch 1, turn
Repeat the pattern, changing colors after 8 rows.
Weave in the ends and you’re finished! The nice, even edges look beautiful without a border, which is a bonus.
I like to end on the same color I started with, so I had one extra row of Patchouli.
I ended up with 6 stripes of Patchouli and 5 stripes each of White Noise and Winter Waves.
You’ll end up with the row of all single crochets, which makes a nice finish to the top edge.
I hope you enjoy making this blanket! Let me know if you made it and what colors you chose. I love comments!
