Why I Love to Crochet

And Why I Started I-crochet.com

Welcome friends!  I’m Debi and I crochet.  Some would say it’s an addiction. I say it’s a creative outlet.

A Funny Story…

After a medical procedure, I asked the recovery room nurse if I said anything while waking up from anesthesia.  I was worried that I’d said something embarrassing.  She said, “No, you just woke up a couple of times and said, “I crochet.”

While not the worst thing I could have said, for sure, at first I felt embarrassed for saying something so seemingly random…even boring.  In my defense, it was freezing in the rooms and two of the nurses were wearing crocheted hats and scarves, so not totally random, right?  Still, not very exciting, like “I mountain climb.” or “I windsurf.” (which I used to do).  Why did I choose to say, “I crochet.”?

How I Became Proud of Crocheting

Over the next few days, I obsessed over pondered why I felt silly for saying, “I crochet.”  It helped to remember why I started in the first place.  After my husband and I retired, we sold the house we lived in for 17 years. We took off with our two big dogs to travel and find our new home.  I needed something to occupy my time and make me feel connected to my son (I had never been any distance from him for more than a couple of weeks) and his future wife.

First I learned the basics. Moving on from making chains and stitches, I was able to create a scarf. I worked my way up to hats and blankets. Choosing the colors and types of yarn, the stitches and the patterns, satisfied my need to be creative. If you crochet, you know that feeling of making something with love. I felt closer to my family with every stitch.

Recounting memories of why I learned to crochet, saying, “I crochet” wasn’t embarrassing at all.  It’s a statement that I make things from a hook and a ball of yarn that have the potential to make others feel love, comfort, and/or a connection to me whenever they see, feel and wear what I’ve made for them. Now my daughter-in-law is crocheting and we enjoy sharing patterns and ideas.

I would like to help others learn this amazing craft so they, too, can say, “I crochet!”  In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing tutorials for basic stitches, some of my favorite crochet resources and materials and patterns for items that are beginner friendly.

  1. I commend you. Very/Excellent/Outstanding website.

Love your story about what you said after your procedure. Better than mine. They wanted to get me out quickly because I woke up running a chainsaw.

    The best of luck
