Easy Chunky Pillow Cover for You to Crochet

Crochet Easy Chunky Pillow Cover

The perfect accent pillow cover for any decor.

I love the ridged texture of this pillow cover.  The 12” x 20” size is great for a lumbar pillow or for a decorative bed pillow.

The buttons on the back of this pillow cover make it easy to remove for washing.

Materials I used:

Bernat Softee Chunky– less than 1 skein

10mm crochet hook

Darning needle

Scissors

Button

Chain 37 or any multiple of 8 plus 5 more chains at the end of your chain row.

Row 1

Double crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook. This will leave 36 chains. Double crochet in each chain across. I prefer to use the back bump. Just like it sounds, you look on the back of the chain and there is a horizontal bump. Use that to make you stitches in.

Chain 1, turn your work.

Row 2

Single crochet in the first 4 stitches.

Front post double crochet in the next 4 double crochet from the previous row.

Continue to alternate 4 single crochet and 4 front post double crochet across.

The last 4 stitches will be single crochet.

Chain 1, turn your work.

Ribbed pattern

Row 3

Single crochet in each stitch across the row.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until the cover is 24” for a 12” x 20” cover. For a 20” x 20” cover,

continue until it is 40” long.

Last row; making button tabs

Buttons

After the last row, which will be a single crochet row, chain 1 and turn.

Single crochet in the first 9 stitches.

Chain 2. Slip stitch into the same stitch.

Repeat this pattern 2 more times.

Single crochet in the last 9 stitches.

Chain 1, fasten off.

Seams:

Fold the pillow cover with the right sides facing each other.

Over lap the first row over the button loop row by about 2”

You can use a tapestry needle and yarn to sew the edges together with a simple whip stitch. You could crochet them together with single crochet stitches if you prefer.

Join your yarn in one of the top corners. Work your way down the side, across the bottom and up the other side.

Make sure to go through all thicknesses, especially when you get to the overlapping rows.

When you reach the top, fasten off and weave in the end.

Turn the pillow cover right side out and place your pillow form in. It should be a little bit snug.

Now all you have to do is match up the buttons to the button loops and sew them on.

I also made a matching blanket. It’s so cozy!

Here is another pillow cover pattern for you:

I retired after teaching for 36 years. Most of my experience is in Early Childhood Special Education. I also taught 3rd and 4th grade and was a K-12 teacher for visually impaired students. Now I live in the country with my husband, a retired aerospace engineer, and our 2 Black Russian Terriers, Zhanna and Misha. We are very fortunate that our son and daughter-in-law live right next door! I love to crochet and enjoy sharing my projects with anyone who is interested! Debi
