How to Crochet the Crunch Stitch

Learn the crunch stitch for making beautifully textured handmade items.

Crunch Stitch

This is a go to stitch combination when I want to create nice, even edges.  The crunch stitch is a beautiful, somewhat slanted textured stitch.

I love this stitch for blankets and sweaters.  It works well with scarves, hats and really anything you’d want to make with a pretty texture!

Follow along. I’m sure once you learn this stitch, you’ll want to keep this in your bag of tricks. Use it for making any number of crochet projects.

Chain any even number, then add one more chain at the end.

Row 1:

Slip Stitch in the 2nd chain from the hook.  Keep your slip stitches loose or it will be difficult to work into them on the next row.  It’s especially important to keep the end stitches loose.

Half double crochet in the next chain.

Alternate slip stitch and half double crochet across the chain row.

End with a half double crochet stitch.

Chain 1, turn

Row 2:

Half double crochet in the first stitch (in the slip stitches from the row below, which slants up.)

Slip stitch in the next stitch (in the half double crochet from the row below, which slants down – “slip down”)

Alternate half double crochet and slip stitch across.

End with a half double crochet.

Chain 1, turn

The texture is created on both sides, making the projects completely reversible.

Repeat row 2 until your project is the size you want.

Try it out and I’m pretty sure you’ll use this stitch many times for future projects!

Try this pattern for a soft, cozy baby blanket with a lovely texture.

I retired after teaching for 36 years. Most of my experience is in Early Childhood Special Education. I also taught 3rd and 4th grade and was a K-12 teacher for visually impaired students. Now I live in the country with my husband, a retired aerospace engineer, and our 2 Black Russian Terriers, Zhanna and Misha. We are very fortunate that our son and daughter-in-law live right next door! I love to crochet and enjoy sharing my projects with anyone who is interested! Debi
