This is exactly what I’ve been looking for!!  I wanted to make another rug (see my bean stitch modern farmhouse rug) and this time I wanted cotton.  My biggest wish was that it be thick and soft.  This yarn is just that!!  The texture and feel that the chunky cotton yarn provides is perfect.

This Premier Chunky Cotton yarn is a much better price on the Premier site and they always have deals.  I got it for $3.99 a skein and had a 20% coupon.

The skeins are only 50 yards, so quite small.

Each stripe of the rug took 1 skein.

Color A: Light Pink

Color B: White (it’s an off white)

Let’s get started!

Chain 50 (or any even number to make the rug as wide as you like.)  My rug is  “ wide and  18“ tall

Row 1:

Skip the first chain.

Half double crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across

Chain 1, turn

Row 2:

Single crochet in the back loop only of the first stitch.

Going in the same stitch, put your hook in the back loop, pull the yarn through.

Put your hook in the next back loop.  Pull the yarn through.  Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

*Put your hook in the same back loop you just used.

Pull the yarn through.  Put your hook in the next back loop.  Pull the yarn through.  Yarn over, pull through all 3 loops.*

Repeat from * to * until you reach the last stitch.

Single crochet in the last blo and include 1 loop of the turning chain to keep the sides straight.

Chain 1, turn.

Row 3:

Half double crochet in the first stitch.

Half double crochet in the back loop only of each stitch across until you reach the last stitch.

Half double crochet in the back loop only and 1 loop of the turning chain.

Chain 1, turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 3, changing colors wherever you want to.

It works best to change colors with a half double crochet row.

When changing colors, start the last stitch of your current color. Drop the yarn and cut a long tail for weaving.  Pick up the next color and pull through the last loops of the previous color.  Chain 1 and start your half double crochet row.

Remember that each row of the rug pattern is always worked in the back loop only of each stitch.

I made 6 rows of each color.

Weave the ends of the yarn into the same color.  I tried working over the ends with the new color, but I didn’t like how the color showed through.

For safety, be sure to either hand sew on a non skid backing like my bean stitch rug.  That rug has been through the washer and dryer several times and has held up nicely.

Even easier, just place a non skid pad under it.  The least expensive solution I’ve found is a roll of non skid shelf liner.  I get mine at the dollar store and cut to fit.

Check out my playlist on YouTube to see all my patterns.  I make mostly blankets, but there are a few other projects as well.  I always have about 6 projects going at any time.  I like starting a new pattern as I think of it.

I hope you enjoyed the pattern!  If you can, please watch the video and like, share and subscribe.  Thank you!
