Make this beautiful plaid blanket with a simple pattern. It is truly so much easier than it looks!

I love this modern farmhouse plaid blanket! I usually give away most of the blankets I make, but this one I kept. It moves around my house, but mainly stays in the guest room. I made a pillow cover that matches!
I used my favorite soft chunky yarn. Bernat Forever Fleece yarn is so incredibly soft and easy to work with. I used 4 skeins of each of 3 colors. The colors I used are:
Color A: White Noise
Color B: Coal
Color C: Chamomile
I also used a 9mm crochet hook. You can go up or down a size depending on how your stitches look.
Let’s begin the modern farmhouse plaid blanket!
With color A:
Chain 121 (my blanket is 52” wide x 58” long)
Row 1:
Skip the first chain. Single crochet into the second chain. I prefer to use the back bump (horizontal bar behind the chain.) This makes a nice foundation row.
Single crochet in each chain (back bump) across.
At the end of the row, chain 3 and turn.
Row 2:
Skip the first stitch. Double crochet in the next stitch. Chain 1. Skip 1 stitch. Double crochet in the next.
Continue this pattern across. End the row with a double crochet.
Chain 3 and turn. You will have 60 spaces between your stitches. The spaces will be where you will weave your chains in later to achieve the plaid look.
Rows 3-7:
Repeat row 2.
At the end of row 7, drop color A before you pull the yarn through the last 2 loops. Cut and leave a tail to weave in.
Pick up color B. Pull through the last 2 loops of the double crochet. Chain 3, turn your work.
Rows 8-13:
Repeat row 2
At the end of row 13, drop color B before pulling through the last 2 loops of the last double crochet. Cut and leave a tail for weaving in.
Pick up color C and pull through the last 2 loops. Chain 3 and turn your work.
You will continue to make 6 rows of each color until you have 4 stripes of each color.
At the end of the last row, fasten off.
Chains for making the plaid blocks:

Chain 142 for each chain. Leave a tail at the beginning and end of the chains to help when securing each.
Make 20 chains of each color. Each block consists of 5 chains of one color woven in and out of the spaces. You’ll be making each color 4 times. I followed the same color pattern of my blanket. I started with a block of 5 chains in color A. The next block of 5 chains is color B. The next block is color C.
Continue this pattern and you’ll end with a block of color C.
You simple weave the chains in and out of the spaces, over and under the bars, using a tapestry needle. At the end of each row, secure the chain by weaving the tails in the top and bottom stitches. You’ll be working over them when you make the border.

Make sure you alternate weaving the chains. If you started the first row with over and under, then the next begins under and over.
When you finish weaving and securing all of your chains, you can begin the border.

Round 1:
Join in the top left corner of the blanket with color A. Make a slip stitch and chain 1.
In the same stitch, make a single crochet, chain 2 and another single crochet in the same stitch. This is your corner stitch.
Now you’ll be working down the left side of the blanket. Chain 1. Make a back post single crochet using the end of the row as a post. Chain 1. Go to the next post at the end of the next row. Make a back post single crochet and chain 1. Continue this pattern until you reach the corner at the bottom of the blanket.
In the corner, make a single crochet, chain 2, single crochet in the same stitch. Chain 1.
The stitches will be tighter across the bottom. Use a smaller hook if needed. Continue making a back post single crochet and chain 1 across. Make sure you don’t go in the same stitch you came out of.
When you reach the corner, after your chain 1, make a single crochet. Chain 2, single crochet for your third corner. Chain 1.
Continue up the right side of the blanket. It will be the same as the left side.
Make your 4th corner at the top and continue across the top as you did on the bottom row.
When you reach the first stitch of the round, put your hook in the stitch, drop color A. Cut, leaving a tail for weaving in. Pick up color B and complete a slip stitch.
Round 2:
Make your corner by going into the chain 2 space of the previous round. Single crochet, chain 2, single crochet. Chain 1.
Now the pattern is very easy. Every chain space from the previous round gets a single crochet and chain 1. When you reach the corner chain 2 space, make a single crochet, chain 2, single crochet, chain 1. Continue the pattern around.
When you reach the first stitch, drop color B, cut and leave a tail for weaving in.
Pick up color C, pull through for a slip stitch. Chain 1.
Round 3:
Repeat round 2.
When you reach the first stitch of round 3, drop color C. Cut and leave a tail for weaving in. Pick up color A. This will be the final round.
Final round (4) of the border for the modern farmhouse plaid blanket:
Repeat round 2. When you reach the first stitch of the round, cut your yarn, leave a tail to make an invisible join.
