The half double crochet stitch is a favorite for many reasons.
Beginners love the half double crochet stitch because it’s easy to learn. You can make most anything with this stitch. I’ve made hats, scarves, blankets and shawls. The stitch is taller than a single crochet, so projects work up faster. While it’s shorter than a double crochet, it also doesn’t leave any holes or gaps.
Try the hdc and I think you’ll be “hooked”😁🧶
Step 1:
Place the working yarn over the hook.

Step 2:
Next, put your hook through the stitch required in your pattern.

Step 3:
Now, put the yarn over the hook again.

Step 4:
Pull the yarn through the stitch. Pull the loop up to make it even with the other loops. You will have 3 loops on your hook.

Step 5:
Finally, put the yarn over your hook again, pull through all 3 loops. That’s it! You made a half double crochet!

Once you master the hdc, you can learn to make it in the back loop only. You can also make it in the front loop only and third loop only. These variations make beautiful textures in whatever you’re making.
Working in the front loop or back loop only create a ribbing effect that’s often used for borders on blankets. I love to use it for cuffs, waistbands and edges when I make sweaters. It gives them that super cozy feel!
Try this pattern that includes half double crochet, but between the stitches.
