Easy Vintage Inspired Crochet Hat Tutorial

Make this very easy hat to keep you warm on those chilly days!

I made this hat and matching scarf pattern after watching an old sitcom. The star often wore a set that I fell in over with.

Crochet easy Pom Pom hat

Materials used for the Pom Pom hat:

Bernat Blanket super bulky 6 weight yarn in Vintage White. (Or Bernat Baby super bulky yarn in Vanilla)

10mm (or smaller if you prefer) crochet hook

Chain 16 (or whatever chain equals the measurement from the top of your head to mid-ear.)  Mine is about 9”.

Standard Hat Sizes:

Row 1:

Single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook.

Now, single crochet in each chain across.

Chain 1, turn your work.

Row 2:

Linked Half Double Crochet row:

Place your hook in the back loop only of the first stitch and make a half double crochet.

Next, put your hook through the horizontal loop below the top of the stitch.

Pull the yarn through.

Now, place your hook in the back loop only of the next stitch. Pull the yarn through.

Finally, yarn over and pull through 3 loops.

For the rest of the row:

Place your hook in the middle of 3 loops beneath the stitch you just made.  Pull the yarn through.

Next, place your hook in the next stitch and pull your yarn through.  Yarn over, pull through 3 loops.

Continue to make linked half double crochets in the back loop only of each stitch across.

Chain 1, turn.

Row 3:

Repeat row 2 until your hat is as wide as you like.

Make it about an inch smaller than your head circumference because it will stretch.  Mine fits pretty snugly, so if you want yours looser, make it a little bigger.

Don’t cut your yarn yet.  We’ll be making a stretchy ribbed brim.

See the chart.

My head is around 22” in circumference so I made mine 21” wide before making the seam.

Hat Brim:  (I used an 8mm hook for the brim. You can use the same size as the hat if you prefer.)

Row 1:

Chain 1, then make a single crochet in the next stitch.

Next, single crochet in the end of each row across.  Try to just use one loop at the end of each row.  Just space them evenly.  It’s better to have too many stitches than not enough so the brim isn’t too tight.

Then when you reach the last stitch,

Row 2:

Chain 6 or more, depending on how wide you want your brim.

Work a slip stitch into the 2nd chain from the hook and slip stitch in each chain.  You will now be working across the bottom edge of the hat.

*When you reach the edge of the hat, skip the stitch the chain is coming from.  Slip stitch in the next 2 stitches and turn your work.

Now you will work back loop only slip stitches back up the brim.  At the top, chain 1 and turn.

Slip stitch in the back loop only.*

Repeat from * to * across.

Keep your stitches loose.

Note: I like to count my slip stitches from the top so I don’t add one when coming up from the bottom.  Also the last stitch coming down from the edge of the brim sometimes is hard to find.  You may need to stretch the brim to find it.

On to the seam of the hat.

Seam:

First, fold your hat together with the right sides together.  Keep your hook in the last stitch  Find the loop across from the last stitch you just made.

Place your hook through just one loop on that side and pull the yarn through that loop and both loops of your last stitch.

Now, place your hook in both loops of the next stitch and 1 loop of the stitch across.  Pull the yarn through all the loops.

Continue this pattern until you reach the top.

Turn the hat right side out.

Decreasing the top:

Round 1:

When you reach the last stitch chain 1.

Now, single crochet 2 stitches together.  (Put your hook in the next stitch, pull the yarn through.  Put your hook in the next stitch, pull the yarn through.  Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.)

Continue to single crochet 2 stitches together.

Join the first single crochet with a slip stitch.

Chain 1 and cut your yarn, leaving a long tail for weaving the top together.

Using a tapestry needle, weave the yarn in and out of the stitches around the top.  When you reach the beginning, pull tightly.

If there are any gaps, sew them with the yarn in an x pattern.

When you’re done, cut your yarn and weave in your ends.

Place the Pom Pom in the center and secure the ends on the inside with a double knot and weave in the ends.  If you want to be able to easily remove the Pom Pom, make a double bow instead of a knot.  Loosely weave in the ends to keep them out of the way.

That’s it!  I hope you enjoy making this Pom Pom hat!  I can’t wait for it to get cold enough to wear it!
