Crochet Checks and Flowers Blanket

This blanket made with Bernat Blanket yarn is wonderfully soft, yet lightweight! I loved making the squares and putting them together. They’re so cushy made with super bulky chenille yarn!

Chunky yarn is so much fun because the projects work up quickly. My hands don’t get tired using the bigger hooks like they do with the smaller hooks and lighter weight yarn.

Making a blanket from squares also means that you can make the squares anywhere and put them together later. I like to make squares when I’m in a waiting room while a family member is getting medical care. That’s so much easier than having a work in progress that’s getting bigger by the row.

Try out the pattern and see what you think!

My blanket is about 62”long x 45” wide

If want yours to be 45” x 45” make 13 green squares and 12 flower squares

For a 35” x 35” baby blanket, make 8 green squares and 8 flower squares.

I used a slip stitch join in purple to bring the squares together.

Watch my video (or one of many on how to join squares) to see how to do this.

Blanket Border:

Round 1

I used an 8mm hook, but you can use up to a 10mm.

Start in any corner with purple.

Make 5 extended sc.  (put your hook through the stitch, pull the yarn through, yarn over and pull through 1 loop like you’re making a chain, then yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops)

Place an extended sc in each stitch around.  When you get to the join seam, place an extended sc in the back loop of the stitch just before and just after the join.

Place 5 extended sc in each corner.  This will help to round out your corner.

Round 2

Put your hook through the top of the first stitch, drop the purple yarn, cut about a 3” tail to weave in.

Pick up the almond yarn, bring it through the stitch and chain 1 with the tail.  Pull the tail through to lock it in.

Now, each stitch around gets a back post sc.

Go into the stitch from the back and around the stitch under the next, complete a sc.  Keep your stitches loose.

Go into the same part of the stitch you just finished and complete a back post sc across the next stitch.  It will end up looking like a ribbon woven through the border.

When you reach the beginning, join the first stitch, cut a 3-4” tail and pull through.  Make an invisible join.  See video if you don’t know how to make an invisible join.

Weave in your ends and that’s it!  If you want to make your blanket lay a little flatter, you can place a towel over it, and gently steam then flatten with your hand.  Do NOT touch the iron to the yarn.

Thanks!  Debi

I retired after teaching for 36 years. Most of my experience is in Early Childhood Special Education. I also taught 3rd and 4th grade and was a K-12 teacher for visually impaired students. Now I live in the country with my husband, a retired aerospace engineer, and our 2 Black Russian Terriers, Zhanna and Misha. We are very fortunate that our son and daughter-in-law live right next door! I love to crochet and enjoy sharing my projects with anyone who is interested! Debi
