Crochet a Beautiful Baby Blanket with Tunisian Knit Stitch

I made this pattern because I wanted the look of a knit blanket, but I don’t knit.  I find that the Tunisian knit stitch looks knit, but is much easier.

I used a standard 5.5 mm crochet hook to make the simple ribbed border.

The blanket is super soft with a nice, dense stitch and a classic border, reminiscent of a sweater.

Materials I used:

Red heart soft #4  in rose blush and off white

8mm Tunisian hook

5.5 mm crochet hook

Stitches used

Slip knot

ch-chain

ss-slip stitch

sc-single crochet

tks-Tunisian knit stitch

Blanket:

The blanket measures  25” wide by 32” high, including the border.  Add more chains at the beginning to make it wider, more rows to make it longer, making sure to use the same number of chains for each color.

This is a good size for a newborn.

If you’re new to Tunisian crochet, I suggest you crochet a few samples first to familiarize yourself with the stitch.

Remember to always chain 1 after a tks row and to tighten the last loop on the return row.  It helps if you make the second loop a tiny bit taller than the first of the return row.

  • Color A   Ch 35 , drop color A (don’t cut) then pull color B through (the loop you pulled through does not count as a chain) and ch 35.

Row 1:

  • Put your hook through the back bump of the 2nd back bump of the ch from the hook, pull the yarn through and keep the loop on the hook.  Continue with all chains (keeping all loops on the Tunisian hook) across to color A.

Pick up color A and continue to the beginning  chain

Row 2: (Return Row)

  • Return row, ch 1, yarn over, pull through 2 stitches, yarn over pull through 2, continue until you only have one loop of color A, drop color A, pick up color B and continue the return row.

Row 3: Tunisian knit stitch (tks)

  • With color B, tks 34 (be sure to only go through color B on the last stitch)
  • drop color B, pick up color A, tks across with color A, (be careful to find the first stitch, it can be hard to find)
  • After the last tks of the row, be sure to go through both loops of the end stitch.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until the blanket is 28” or however long you prefer, keeping in mind the border will add length at the top and bottom.8”

Border:

  • switch to 5.5mm regular crochet hook, single crochet in each knit stitch across, (switching colors just like the tks rows, or keep it all one color)
  • If using 2 colors for the border,  at the end of color B on the top row, pull up a long loop and drop for now.
  • Pick up color A, yarn over, pull through the first knit stitch of color A and make a sc.
  • pull up a big loop and drop it for now.
  • Continue Continue to  around until you reach color B.  Pull up a big loop, drop and leave color A for now.
  • Go back to color B
  • *Chain 12, sc down the chain to the blanket border (11), ss in the next 2 stitches in edge of the blanket, being careful to skip the stitch the chain originated in)
  • turn, sc blo, up into the sc’s you just made and sc through both loops at the top. Make sure you count the 11 stitches.  It’s easy to put one too many stitches in.
  • Ch 1, turn, sc blo down (11), ss next 2 stitches. *
  • Continue this pattern until you reach the corner. (Each corner is worked the same)

Corner:

  • At the top of the row, after you sc in the full stitch, instead of coming back down, ch 12, you’ll now be making the same sc ribbed border along the next edge.  Repeat from * to *  until you reach the next corner.
  • When you reach color A, finish the 2nd ss with color A , sc blo in each st up the row even the top stitch(this is the only time you’ll go in the blo of the top stitch going up the row)
  • der, complete the last 2 slip stitches.
  • Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing the 2 colors together.  Pull the yarn through the last stitch and thread the yarn through a darning needle.
  • Starting with color A side, go through the back loop from the middle (under loop) towards you, then go through front loop of color B, from the middle, under and through the stitch, like lacing a shoe.
  • until you reach color B again.  Go into the back loop of color A and the front loop of color B (facing you) and pull throughFasten off and weave in the end.

You may need to block the edges with just a little steam and press them in place with your fingers.  Do not touch an iron to the yarn.  You can also wash it and flatten it while damp.
