I love the little twist this stitch makes! This Cat’s Cradle yarn has beautiful, soft colors that gradually change, making it look striped, but without any harsh color changes.
Yarn this soft is wonderful to crochet with. The bulky 5 weight yarn is my favorite to work with as it’s not too thin, not too thick…just right! Premier Puzzle yarn comes in so many pretty color combinations. The Cat’s Cradle color was perfect for this blanket.
You’ll appreciate the easy 2 row repeat, just sc and hdc slip stitch, explained in the pattern and on the video.
I used Premier Puzzle bulky 5 weight yarn in the color Cat’s Cradle.
Look at this pattern that also uses 5 skeins of Cat’s Cradle:
I used less than 5 skeins and at the time I’m writing this, it was still $5.99 a skein at Walmart! So, less than $30 to make a blanket that’s
The optional border uses sc and dc-so easy!!
I also used a 10mm crochet hook. I love the Tulip line of hooks and this did not disappoint.
Let’s get started!
Ch 120, or any number of chains to make your blanket as long as you like. Worked vertically, my blanket is 55” long x 40” wide.
Note: If your edges start slanting, add a stitch to the side that’s leaning in. Decrease a stitch on the side that’s leaning out. Do this on the single crochet row. You may need to do this more than once. It depends on how tight or loose your stitches are.
Row 1
Single crochet in the back bump of the 2nd chain from the hook and in the back bump of each chain across.
Ch 1, turn
Row 2
Half double crochet slip stitch (yarn over, hook through stitch, 3 loops on your hook. Pull the first loop through the last 2.)
Half double crochet slip stitch in the first stitch and in each stitch across.
Ch 1, turn.
Row 3
Sc in the first stitch and in each stitch across.
Ch 1, turn
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until the blanket is as wide as you like. You should end on a single crochet row.
When the blanket is as wide as you like, (see my standard blanket measurements chart for reference, but I just make them as big as what feels right to me.) This one is a good size for a crib, toddler bed or throw for your couch or at the end of a bed.
If you don’t want a border, just chain 1, cut your yarn, pull through to make a knot and weave in the ends.
If you want to make a border continue. It’s very easy.
Border:

Round 1:
When you reach the last stitch in the final single crochet row, make 3 single crochet in the same stitch.
You’ll be working down the side now, with the right side (with the twists) facing you.
Single crochet in each stitch (the end of each row on the sides counts as stitches.)
When you reach the last stitch, place 3 single crochet in the corner.
You’ll now be working across your beginning row at the bottom of the blanket.
Single crochet in each stitch across.
Place 3 single crochet in the last stitch. Now you’ll be working up the side of the blanket. Place a single crochet in each stitch (end of each row).
When you reach the last row, place 3 single crochet in the last stitch.
Working across the top of the blanket, place a single crochet in each stitch.
When you reach the corner stitch, join the first single crochet with a slip stitch, chain 1 and turn. Be sure to turn to make the border stitch bump out on the other side, which is the front of the blanket.
Round 2:
Slip stitch in the first stitch
Double crochet in the next.
Continue alternating slip stitch and double crochet until you reach the corner.
When you reach a corner, place 3 stitches, depending on where you are in the pattern. (It will either be slip stitch, double crochet, slip stitch or double crochet, slip stitch and double crochet depending on how many stitches you have) in the corner stitch.
Continue to alternate slip stitch and double crochet around, placing 3 stitches in each corner.
When you finish the last corner, slip stitch into the first stitch and fasten off. I think this is a really simple and cute finishing touch for this blanket.
I hope you enjoy this pattern.
